June Fabric Splurge

Splurge feels like the better term than budget.  I spent some money last month on fabric.  Damn you flannel explosion quilt and Crimson Tate for having that awesome Sexy Lumberjack fabric.  The quilt was well received and they love it!  No worries, I’m still on track mostly.

Three quilts were sold this month and some more are coming in July.  Some of the money spent in June was for a big quilt on commission for July.  More low volume fabrics were needed for the background on the Quilts for Pulse blocks.

Over the last six months I have really stopped and asked myself if I need this fabric?  What project will it go with?  Will I use this soon?  The quilter with the biggest stash at the end just has a big stash and probably a wish list of projects.  Also, a very confused family on what to do with all that glorious fabric.

For the 4th we are disconnecting from the world at the lake.  I’m contemplating selling off some of my fabrics locked away in my favorites cabinet.  They are literally just sitting there and I haven’t been inspired to use them.  Wait, you’re probably thinking you’ve read this before and you have.  Not going to lie.  It’s hard to part with something you truly enjoy but don’t feel inspired by.

Let’s tackle that later in July.

June was been a wonderful month for our family.  Lots of family time and adventures.  We spent some time at the lake and went on a little adventure.  We tried hiking but P wasn’t really into it.  So we went searching for covered bridges.  Found one.

We could be in Illinois in the photo for all we know.  This is literally in the middle of nowhere.  We found a few others but it had started to downpour and we gave up getting out of the car.

fabric painting

During the Indy Modern Quilt Guild meeting this month, Karen introduced most of us to fabric painting.  This was really fun and something new to learn.  This concept was totally stolen from Holly’s masterpiece.  Something about it was therapeutic too.  I made a few others and this was my favorite creation.

These new fabrics came to live with me for a bit.  StitchStashDiva has wonderful service and will do 1/4 yard cuts.  They are for a commissioned quilt for July.  Let’s just say this was the inspiration.  It will not be exactly the same, but using some of the same ideas.

P and I celebrated some birthdays this month.  Kid loves cupcakes and probably smashed 2 pretty quickly.

I’m back to running a bit more, not as much as I would hope though.  Aiming for 3 days per week and honestly I’m doing good to get in 2.  However this gem is was hiding on one of my routes.  I rarely go on this route, but so happy I did.

Purple ombre.  Look for some quilt pictures to be taken here in the future.

I’m off to relax and decompress for a few days.  Enjoy your 4th of July and make some wonderful memories.

May Fabric Budget Update

Another successful month with the strict fabric budget.  I only spent $12.73 on a couple of scrap fabric bundles for a block swap.  This month has been chaotic and not much as much time for sewing.  There are a few projects in the works, but they are all STASH.

Low volume prints seem to be lacking from my stash consistently.  These scrap bundles are a good way for me to keep them on hand without too much commitment or cost.  I have to admit I’m becoming a low volume fan for backgrounds, but doubt it will replace black and white.

Other happenings in May.  It was the 100th running of the Indy 500.  Raceday is a big deal and has been since my childhood.  It was a spectacular celebration and race.  P attended his first carb day and concert.  JOURNEY!  His grandma is so proud.

Porter at the racetrack

He was not in attendance for the actual race.  A three year old in a crowd of 350,000 people sounded like my nightmare. He did enjoy watching the pit stop challenge and all the festivities.  The kid is obsessed with racecars.

At home we have been trying new cooking techniques.  My morning sewing time has been spent making bread instead.  Delicious artisan bread in our dutch oven.  It’s pretty easy, but just takes some time and gets a little sticky.

Only two quilts were finished this month, more are in the works.  I took my solid scraps with me on my work trip and started on an epic string quilt.  100 squares is what I have cut and there could be enough solid scraps to make that happen.

Finally, my peony bush bloomed.  It was gorgeous and smelled delightful.  Always reminds me of my grandma and the large garden beds she had full of peonies as a kid.  I’m give or take on the ants that surround the blooms.

Not sure what June is going to bring for sewing and quilting time.  We have many family activities planned and aim to be outdoors as much as possible.

April Fabric Budget

Hello May and all the wonderful things that come along with it.  I live in Indianapolis and May means racing.  The 100th running of the Indy 500 is taking place this year.  There may be a few black and white themed items coming up on the blog.

As for my fabric budget…it’s still in tact.  Took a big hit this month but I destashed out some fabric as well.  I’m actually up for the month.  I picked up a 10 yard box of fabric from Whimsy Fabrics &  Quilts as they are clearing out some fabrics.

Most were not my style, but I do have enough to try a quilt I have been wanting to try without really digging into my precious stash.  Win/Win??

Had to also pick up some white on white for a few projects, but had a great coupon.

Here is the final product for the month.

Four months in and I’m up, I will take that.  There are a few other fabrics still available for destash over on my Instagram account.  I’m having some thoughts on just destashing a ton of what I have and trying to keep a very small selection.

What are your thoughts on a fabric stash?

Gender Neutral Triangle Quilt – HELP

The vision is my head for this baby quilt.  However, I’M STUCK!  Full creative road block.  So readers I turn to you for some input.

For the color scheme I went a little preppy.  I adore the jade color and think it pairs well with the mustard.  Here is my original pull from the quilt store.

That pink mass on top is a bridesmaid dress from the wedding.  That will be used as part of the binding.  Keep that in mind for the next part.  After cutting the triangles I sprinkle in some gray and white for balance.

Tonight I started laying this quilt out.  Something doesn’t feel right about it as I look at it?  Hubby says I’m overthinking it, it looks great.

Off to my stash I went.  Pretty sure it’s missing a navy.  I would love some feedback or ideas.   Note these are navy/blue, my camera wants to pick it up more black.  Challenge of night time pictures.

My eyes were drawn to the small navy diamonds to try and provide balance.

I may throw these in too.  Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Scrappy Irish Chain Baby Quilt Finished

Scrappy Irish Chain Baby Quilt

Updated as of March 2024.  Lots of traffic from this post still on the blog.  I love a scrappy Irish chain quilt for a baby shower.

Scrappy Irish Chain may be a new favorite for me.  Maybe it is the simplicity of the blocks or the overall scrappy look.  The baby has arrived.  It’s a BOY!

In the card to the parents I included this story about the quilt.

After I finished quilting we went to a wings and pizza place nearby.  I bound the quilt while at dinner.  I tried my best not to get wing sauce on the quilt.  While the quilt survived our dinner, my hope is that it’s used and gets lots of stains in it’s life.

For the backing, I dug deep into my stash.  The print is from the Taxi line from 2009?

Hubby helped me pick out the binding.  Red or blue were the top choices.  Red won and looks great on the quilt.

Instead of just straight lines I tried a more of the square and rectangle free motion quilting.

Look for another scrappy Irish chain in the future.

March Fabric Budget

Well…I bought some fabric this month.  All with a purpose and part of an upcoming blog series:  Baby Quilt Overload.  No really, there are 5-6 baby quilts in the works right now.  More on how I manage that in a later post.

fabric budget march

So what did I get with my $47.02 spent?  Quite a bit due to some good sales and thrifty shopping.  A local quilt store was having a big sale to make room for spring collections.  I was able to purchase most of the fabrics for a gender neutral baby quilt that is in the works.

The were clearing out all of their American Made Brand solids.  Sad, but they are not selling at this store.  The fabric isn’t as soft as others, but I’m hoping after washing it’s better.  I picked up a periwinkle solid for another baby quilt in the works.

Indy Upcycle is a crafter’s dream come true.  It is my go to store when I’m looking for something unique or want to try something new.  I went in to look for tags to create better quilt row tags.  Then I saw the white and brown circle flannel fabric.  This huge piece was $4.  I’m going to use it to make a few items around the house and possibly a picnic quilt backing.

There should not be much buying in April, it’s all about sewing.  Check back tomorrow as to why.
