Modern Marmalade Quilt #1

Twins!  No, not for me for but for a customer of mine.  They are entering toddlerhood and she wanted to revamp the nursery.  She chose Moda’s new line in Marmalade.  Great colors that could be used for both her boy and girl.

I got to see the newly decorated nursery and it was adorable.

For the quilts she loved the random pieced look.  This is actually harder than it looks.  I wanted the layout to be random but not like I tried.  Maybe next time I’ll blindfold myself and stick fabric to the design wall as an option.  Ha!

Here is the finished quilt.

The backing is in Kona Pomegranate.  The color works well with the palette from this collection. Warning:  LOTS of pink!

More Orange

Seems like everyone is having boys or at least that’s what my sewing trend has been.  Lots of blue, so how do you take blue and make it more fun.  Orange.  I tend to stick with gray as an accent but I wanted a modern nautical theme for this quilt.

Originally the quilt was going to be in the pattern like the citrus quilt.  Instead I went for an all over pattern.

I wanted to keep it simple and I think I succeed.

The back was just pieced was some leftover fabrics.  Wonky much?

I swear it was straight when I sandwiched it.  Oh well, gives it character right?

Orange you glad to see me.

New projects outside of a quilt are always fun and exciting.  With this project the hardest part was finding the project.  My friend wanted the Robert Kaufman Orange Metro Tiles, almost impossible to find.  Finally found almost 2 yards to go with the project.

Since I don’t normally make pillows I needed a tutorial to get me going.  I found this tutorial online and pinned to my DIY board.  I finally checked something off my Pinterest list.  I will be making these again especially to coordinate with the new upstairs furniture.

The backing I made too large, but it was easy to trim down and still looked great in the end.

Thanks to my neighbor who has these great chairs outside, they made a good prop to showcase the color.

On the back above the envelope I added a faux button.

The tutorial is well-written and very easy to follow.  Give it a try if you need something quickly.

Changes are coming

It has been quite a busy end of summer in the sewing room and overall at the house.  Look for lots of finishes to be shared in the coming weeks.    Also, we crossed a major thing off the household to do list…finishing the basement.  This has been a task since we moved in over two years ago.

Here’s a snapshot of what my new living room looks like.  LOVE my new chairs.  Still have some work to do in here and some minor details.  The new set up makes the room look huge.

We started like this and chaos all over the house with stuff just being everywhere.

And now it looks like this well sorta.

It’s exhausting doing all of the work.

I hate the word man cave, but it’s kind of a cave down there.  I see us spending lots of time down there.  With the basement complete, we can focus on other areas of the house as well.  I’m hoping by December we have everything where we want it.

Let’s be honest, it may be finished by March.  By March lots has to be done because we have a new addition on the way.  I’m so excited to get to do some sewing that will stay in the house.  Even more excited that the nursery will be done in Bella by Lotta Jansdotter.

Less writing, more sewing.  I have a huge to do list to work on this week.

A little piece of family history

My list of custom quilts this summer has been quite long, but this one was just a bit different.  A new grandpa reached out to me to incorporate a piece of his mother’s crocheting into a quilt for his first granddaughter.  What a lovely idea.

I will tell you cutting into another woman’s handmade work made me cringe at first and took forever to safely remove the four squares he asked for.  The nursery was being done in pinks and browns and he preferred something in solids.

While out shopping for the fabrics at the local quilt store, someone recommended a pinwheel pattern.  What a good way to keep it simple and a bit more traditional.

Here is the entire front.

Can you imagine the work that went into crocheting the center piece?

The back was very simple in a coordinating print.

Have you ever used a family heirloom as part of a quilt or project?

Mod-Mosaic Baby Girl Quilt

My scrap bin had really been filling up and I had a request for a baby girl quilt.  The colors were orange, pink, light purple, brown, and a bit of yellow.  The idea struck me to use Oh Fransson’s Mod Mosaic pattern for the quilt to use up my scraps.

Improv piecing is one of my favorite things about modern quilting. I really tried to keep the piecing random and building as I went with every block.

For quilting I went with random lines criss crossing along the way.

I have already received a photo of the cute baby all snuggled up on the quilt enjoying some snoozing.
