Changes are coming

It has been quite a busy end of summer in the sewing room and overall at the house.  Look for lots of finishes to be shared in the coming weeks.    Also, we crossed a major thing off the household to do list…finishing the basement.  This has been a task since we moved in over two years ago.

Here’s a snapshot of what my new living room looks like.  LOVE my new chairs.  Still have some work to do in here and some minor details.  The new set up makes the room look huge.

We started like this and chaos all over the house with stuff just being everywhere.

And now it looks like this well sorta.

It’s exhausting doing all of the work.

I hate the word man cave, but it’s kind of a cave down there.  I see us spending lots of time down there.  With the basement complete, we can focus on other areas of the house as well.  I’m hoping by December we have everything where we want it.

Let’s be honest, it may be finished by March.  By March lots has to be done because we have a new addition on the way.  I’m so excited to get to do some sewing that will stay in the house.  Even more excited that the nursery will be done in Bella by Lotta Jansdotter.

Less writing, more sewing.  I have a huge to do list to work on this week.

A little piece of family history

My list of custom quilts this summer has been quite long, but this one was just a bit different.  A new grandpa reached out to me to incorporate a piece of his mother’s crocheting into a quilt for his first granddaughter.  What a lovely idea.

I will tell you cutting into another woman’s handmade work made me cringe at first and took forever to safely remove the four squares he asked for.  The nursery was being done in pinks and browns and he preferred something in solids.

While out shopping for the fabrics at the local quilt store, someone recommended a pinwheel pattern.  What a good way to keep it simple and a bit more traditional.

Here is the entire front.

Can you imagine the work that went into crocheting the center piece?

The back was very simple in a coordinating print.

Have you ever used a family heirloom as part of a quilt or project?

Mod-Mosaic Baby Girl Quilt

My scrap bin had really been filling up and I had a request for a baby girl quilt.  The colors were orange, pink, light purple, brown, and a bit of yellow.  The idea struck me to use Oh Fransson’s Mod Mosaic pattern for the quilt to use up my scraps.

Improv piecing is one of my favorite things about modern quilting. I really tried to keep the piecing random and building as I went with every block.

For quilting I went with random lines criss crossing along the way.

I have already received a photo of the cute baby all snuggled up on the quilt enjoying some snoozing.

Citrus Explosion

Using scraps has been a priority over the last couple of months.  I realized my scraps were exploding out of their storage and something and to be done.

This fabric was the back and quilt was to be in greens, oranges, and yellows.

I used a custom pattern of 1.5″ and 3.5″ rectangles in order to create the layout.

I added 8-10″ of white on the side to help accentuate the colors.  The thread used for quilting was a variegated green, orange and yellow.

Binding is a solid orange fabric.

Great way to use up scraps and create a cute baby quilt.

Lovebirds Quilt 2

Using the left over prints from the Spoonflower fabric from the first Lovebirds quilt, I wanted to make a second.  With this print, I have created two quilts if not maybe a third with the tree prints I have left.  This quilt started out as gender neutral.  The baby was born and turns out it was a girl.  Back to the design wall I go.

color ideas

Knowing the quilt was going to a girl, I added in the yellow and white retro floral print from my stash.  I think it really tied it together and made it more girlish.  Keeping the blues and greens make the yellow stand out more.

Lovebirds version 2

The quilting is done in yellow to really pop against the white. For the backing I pieced together some larger pieces I had in the stash.  A vintage sheet in yellow and white stripes, gray floral print and just a solid coordinate with all the colors on the front.  I knew for the binding I wanted to use an orange color.

My measly attempt at making a bird that looks similar to the front birds. Trust me it looks better from back here.  Poor things beak was messed up in sewing.  Too late to do birdie surgery.

Hope the new baby girl enjoys lots of snuggles in her new quilt.

Over the Rainbow Charm Swap

A couple of months ago I was apart of a Rainbow Charm swap.  The goal was to have everyone send 2 prints in their assigned colors.  Lots of great prints were selected in all colors.  My charms are sitting beside me in the sewing room awaiting inspiration.  Check my Pinterest board for rainbow inspired ideas.

I had orange and I sent two Kate Spain prints that I enjoy and didn’t want to see one leave the stash.  No worries I added some yardage for when I’m ready to do more.  Okay hoarding the Central Park print from my local quilt shop.

Here are some of the things group members have created in the Flickr group.  Also, a sneak peek of some of the wonderful prints I received.  Using these will be on my list for August.
