green

It’s all Greek to me

Challenge:  going outside of set comfort zone.  Typically, my quilts are squares or circles.  Friend asked me to make a custom quilt with his fraternity letters and colors.  I saw heat bond in my future and applique.

The colors are purple, green and yellow.  Had to be cautious to limit the purple and not making the quilt girly.  Upon applying the letters on the black background the colors really popped.  Decided to quilt with black thread on the top.  Luckily, it did tone down the color of the letters.

Love the tight quilting on there.  Gives structure and sore shoulders, ha.

Customer was happy and I realized I had missed applique.  Good thing I have some stuff cut out and ready to go for another project.

Week of two completed quilts…part 2

This quilt was my submission to the Modern Quilt Guild’s Challenge #3.  Organic was the word we were challenged with to build a quilt around.  Challenge accepted.  I spent lots of time building an idea and looking for inspiration.  Then it hit me.

I was driving with my girlfriend while we were out for her birthday and I was looking at all of the vibrant green trees with brown and purple all mixed in along the road.  When we got to dinner, I busted out paper and started designing.  Later that week I went on bike route along the Monon Trail in Indy and it all come together.  Those same colors were exploding along the trail.  It made riding 25 miles a little easier.

This is my interpretation of the trail with all the bright bold colors of purple, green and brown that outlined the trail.

Quilty has gone GREEN!

A big thank you goes out to Indianapolis Power & Light for offering the option to put your home on 25%,50%, or 100% green renewable resources.  I had been hesitant since there is a fee attached with the program.

Well we have been on 25% for a few months and have seen minimal increase to the overall bill.

So today I took the leap and but the entire house on 100% green renewable energy resources.  For my customers, that means that all of my products made from here on out are made using more green energy.  I think that’s a great way to give back.

More baby quilts – June Challenge

This quilt has been a work in progress for some time.  With the Indy Modern Quilt Guild’s June finish challenge, I thought this would be perfect.  The top and back were done a bit ago, but the back wasn’t big enough.  So I cut it in half and added the white stripe, nice touch. I am loving how the close quilting turned out.

The finished turned into a quilt for a friend’s baby shower.

Solids and Stripes Part 2

This is #2 of the three baby quilts I have been working on.  My neighbor wanted something for her friend that is having baby #2 very soon.  I knew this could be bold and bright.  Baby boy quilts are the hardest especially since you try to keep things from getting girly.  Finding fabric can be really difficult.

I was out with another friend shopping and came across this dress at Saks.  We were just passing through, I can’t convince myself to purchase anything from there.

Mrs O was seen wearing the dress a few days later.

Solids and bold colors, I loved it and the neighbor approved.  Here is what I started with.

I cut the fabric into 5 strips measuring 1.5″, 2.5″, 3″ and 4″.

I started piecing and the whole quilt came together pretty quickly.  I gave my neighbor a sneak peek last week and she was loving it.

For an added touch I hand embroidered Sam onto a scrap to use on the back, similar to the Mother’s Day quilts.  I finished that part up over ice cream with some IMQG ladies.

Here is the finished results.  This quilt has become my favorite of all the quilts that I have done.  I’m loving the color combination and the back.  The binding fabric really tied the front and back together.

Off to go work on baby Sam #2 quilt.  Two friends requested baby boy quilts for Sam’s both due in June, odd.
