New Fabrics from Timeless Treasures

The groundhog saw his shadow yesterday, yuck.  I do know a few people that threaten to drive to PA and beat up poor Phil for his prediction.  The skies have been very gray for the last two weeks.  Makes me wonder why I left Florida again?  Just kidding.  I LOVE Indy and being back.

For today’s inspiration I went wondering around on fabric manufacturer’s Web sites.  I wanted to see how I could get myself into trouble with shopping.  Timeless Treasures has a lot of new fabrics out for spring.  I think the cold dreary weather is drawing me to the bright spring colors.  Here are the collections that I liked the best…so far.  There is no stash busting going on here.

Strawberry Field by Alice Kennedy.  My favorite is the blended print fabric.  These have to be in my stash. For what project, I’m not sure.

The other line that caught my eye was Lily by Alice Kennedy.  It has a great blend of pink, green and black.  These are bolder hues and not delicate springy colors.  A fat quarter collection of this collection wouldn’t be the worse thing.  These are great accent pieces for any project, don’t know that I would use them as a project as a group.

The Strawberry Field line reminds me of the Hoffman Color Splash line that I talked about a couple of months ago.  Very interesting, could just be a “Spring” trend.

Now I remember why I do this…

I am slowly adjusting to my new schedule/routine back in Indy.  One of the first things I did once I arrived was set up my sewing machine.  Granted, most of my clothes haven’t made it into my dresser, but my machine is completely functional.

Everyday I have managed to sew about 30 minutes.  My stash of pot holders is growing quite nicely.  Thank you FREEZING cold weather.

Last night I attended my first guild meeting in Indy.  Not sure what a guild is?  Imagine 100+ fabric obsessed women sitting in a room with a guest speaker.  Nancy Odom, who is a local artist, was the guest speaker.  Her use of humor made the evening meeting rather enjoyable.  I took from her that precision is key in creating your quilts, but have fun with it.  It was great to hear that because it is so true.  Taking the time to cut accurately will make a world of difference in my finished project.

Guilds not only have guest speakers, lectures, workshops and projects, but they also give back to the community.  The guild had made quilts to be distributed to children in need at a local school.  They read the thank you letters from the principal and recipients, which moved me.  I started quilting to give back to those in need.  I will get back to that.  At least one a month I WILL be donating to a charity…I love Project Linus!!

During show and tell one woman showed her quilt that was going to that same local school for their use in Black History month.  Amazing.

Finally, there was talk about a guild member that had recently passed.  She passed her cherished stash onto another member.  In process of sorting out everything she found 32 UFOs, unfinished projects.  They are hoping to finish these through out the year and give back to her family.  What a great way to honor a quilter.

I quilt because I can give back and touch someone’s life.  Plus…I LOVE fabric!!!!

June Fab Hop Shop

Found out an interesting fact this week about people who purchase material…

95% of material is bought through the big box stores.

There are a lot of quilters out there and that is a lot of material.  Imagine if we could shift that just 10%, we would be helping out the local shops so much more.  I admit, I fill up my stash with remanants from JoAnns about once a month.  Most of the fabric that I have in my stash now is from a big box store.  That is slowly changing.

Prior to moving to Florida, I had never entered a quilt shop.  Once we moved I realized that there was a shop two blocks from our house.  Since I didn’t have a job at first, I would go to the Sew and Quilt Shop quite often.  My world of quilting has changed completely.  I feel like a have the best resource just around the corner from my house.  For my special projects that I have made, I have used only quilt shop fabric.  It’s more costly, but is much better quality.

The reason I go into this detail is because I have found a new obsession.  I came across this on a Website and starting doing the hop shop in April.  I did not win any prizes, but this month I’m trying to get through all of them.  Visit the Fab Shop Hop to find great quilt shops that offer online catalogs.  I’ve seen a couple new ideas in the 50 shops I have visited so far.  Some are a little to country for me, some have great tips, and some really need to update their stuff.
