Marmalade Potholders

Marmalade had to be one of my favorite lines of fabric that came out in 2012.  After making the boy and girl quilts for a set of twins, there were quite a few scraps left over.  I held a giveaway on the blog for a set of potholders to be made out of the winners favorite color way of the quilts.

Darcie, a fellow member of the Indy Modern Quilt Guild, was the winner.  Little did I expect to get so busy with work that I didn’t have time to create a simple set of potholders.  As the scrap organization started, the scraps resurfaced and conveniently it was right before our February meeting.  Time to sew.

Darcie chose this quilt as her favorite.

For the potholders I wanted to mimic the colors I used on the quilt.  Kona celery and ash were added in to coordinate.

She was really happy with the outcome.  Look for more this stye of potholders to be added to the Etsy shop over the coming months.

Modern Marmalade Quilt #2

Using the green, blue, yellow, gray and orange fabrics from the fat quarter set, a boy’s quilt was created.  Using the same random pieced layout as his sister’s was a bit harder.  There were limited fabrics without flowers to select from.  I wanted to incorporate them but not overwhelm the quilt.

The quilting is done in wonky straight lines in a light grey thread.

Coordinates really well with the solid Kona Ash grey back.

Using 2.5 inch strips left over from the top fabrics, I created a pieced binding.  I did the same for the girl’s quilt.

So glad I got to use this great new fabric when it’s actually new.  I’m usually so far behind on fabrics that nothing is “new” when I get to sew with it.

Modern Marmalade Quilt #1

Twins!  No, not for me for but for a customer of mine.  They are entering toddlerhood and she wanted to revamp the nursery.  She chose Moda’s new line in Marmalade.  Great colors that could be used for both her boy and girl.

I got to see the newly decorated nursery and it was adorable.

For the quilts she loved the random pieced look.  This is actually harder than it looks.  I wanted the layout to be random but not like I tried.  Maybe next time I’ll blindfold myself and stick fabric to the design wall as an option.  Ha!

Here is the finished quilt.

The backing is in Kona Pomegranate.  The color works well with the palette from this collection. Warning:  LOTS of pink!
