Mod-Mosaic Baby Girl Quilt

My scrap bin had really been filling up and I had a request for a baby girl quilt.  The colors were orange, pink, light purple, brown, and a bit of yellow.  The idea struck me to use Oh Fransson’s Mod Mosaic pattern for the quilt to use up my scraps.

Improv piecing is one of my favorite things about modern quilting. I really tried to keep the piecing random and building as I went with every block.

For quilting I went with random lines criss crossing along the way.

I have already received a photo of the cute baby all snuggled up on the quilt enjoying some snoozing.

Triangle, triangle, why can’t you be square?

Right now many of quilts are custom orders for people with personalized ideas for their friend’s new arrivals.  The Dark Side of the Moon quilt and the Red Scrappy Circles quilt were a big hit.

One request was for a quilt that was a Czech Flag.

Do you see what I see?  Y-seams.  EEEK!!!  I went off to Pinterest to get some ideas on how to take the triangle feel and make it work.

Based on this quilt I had the idea of using blue, red and white fabrics that didn’t scream American flag to get started.  I thought gray would be good complimenting color.  Off to the store I went and found all of the fabrics.  There are a variety of Moda fabrics and a few others mixed in.  I used the Tri-Rex tool to help me cut out many 5 1/2″ inch triangles.

The piecing went well but I did lose some of the points when sewing the rows together.  Good quilting can trick the eye into seeing that perfect triangle.

Heard this weekend this quilt was a hit too.  I have a few triangles left over and I’m energized to give them another go.

Started as a baby quilt…

This quilt was supposed to be finished last spring.  Of course I put it off for a number of reasons.  Last weekend I was determined to get it finished.  My goal for the rest of year, finish up projects.  Obviously so I can start more.

No pattern was used and I really liked it.  I had hit a creative roadblock with the project originally, but I put it on the wall and it came to me.

These are batiks from a manufacturer’s sample I had collected a few years back.  Solid is Kona Black.  Too bad it collects any hair, thread, and/or fuzzies within 10 feet of the quilt.

For the back I used a Hoffman purple batik.  Could have gone just straight line quilting like normal.  This is a special quilt for our really good friend’s baby.  I have never done any quilting like this and was really happy with the result.  No bunching, no real issues.

I will be trying the quilting again.

Along with the quilt, I picked out a book to be read to the now toddler.  Hoping she snuggles under the quilt while the book is read to her.

Used stash fabric and finally got something finished some my unfinished project bags.

The Lovebirds Quilt

I have been playing on Spoonflower for some time and have never bought anything.  A customer wanted a quilt for their friends that are bird lover’s to say the least.

Here is the fabric they selected.

I wasn’t sure the full blown idea, but thanks to the ladies at Indy Modern Quilt Guild they helped me figure it out. Simple frames were the way to go.

Gender neutral can be difficult because you can’t do too much of blue or girly colors.  However, you need to find a balance so that it could work for either a boy or girl.  Focus on yellows, oranges, greens, browns and throw in blue and red.

For quilting I opted for close straight lines.

I’m so happy with how this quilt turned out.  I have enough left to make something else from the Spoonflower fabric.

Baby Boy Strip Quilt

I have missed making strip quilts and I needed to put together a baby boy quilt.  I bought this owl fabric a while back not sure what do with it.  Inspiration was born.  Use the colors in the owl fabric to make a coordinating front in strips.  Done.

Using just a bit of yellow really gave it a nice pop.  The binding is gray along with the quilting.

The owls are from Robert Kaufman’s Zoologie line.  The eyes are super cute on the owls, some are sleepy and some are surprised.

Here’s a peak of what’s going on around our house.  We are working on basement renovation this summer.  This is my basement floor currently.  Had to have it done to add in a half bath.  So the house is a disaster.

Dark Side of the Moon

Seriously, how cool are these parents that their baby gets this quilt?  I mean my household loves Pink Floyd, but I really need to meet these parents.  I have never seen my hubby not want me to send out a quilt, he really liked it.

This quilt should have been easier, but I made it much harder on myself.  With it being a baby quilt, it needs to hold up to multiple washings.

Photos do not do justice for this quilt.
