Sewing Retreat Prep

My test today…pack my car with room for a friend and her stuff for an overnight sewing retreat.  Simple correct?  Ha!  My list of projects is quite long and I’m ready to sew.

It’s going to be a fun sleepover with lots of pictures.  Hoping I come home with some sweet prizes.

ABCs Baby Quilt

My brother in law had asked for a baby quilt back in December for another of his friends.  With everything we have had going on, it got pushed down my list.  He wanted something with green, red, and blue.  I had lots of those leftover from my patch of potholders from Christmas fabrics without screaming CHRISTMAS!

I started with the Moda Flurry and Ready, Set, Snow  along with Kona Solids that coordinate. My original blocks looked like Tetris. I decided to add in gray, my go to color this year, to each block to make it look less Christmas.  They went to the IMQG meeting with me to finish the cutting.

The fabrics I added to each block. Goodbye Tetris.

Here is the finished quilt with the embroidered ABCs, finished blocks and red quilting.  I like it.

It left Indiana to it’s new home last weekend.  I hope Ella enjoys many warm snuggles under it.

Modern Solids Baby Boy Quilt

Ah, Kona Solids, what would my fabric stash be without you?  Prints are great, but I am loving solids.  You can really create something that is bold and very simple, yet has a great effect.

I enjoyed making the bar graph quilts previously and had some of the green, blue, yellow, and orange left over.  I knew I wanted to make another baby boy quilt, but wasn’t sure what I was going do.  There was some fabric in my stash that I could have used, but it wasn’t the correct one.

On a Friday afternoon I went to Crimson Tate as I was out running errands.  Not that I needed more fabric, I just needed inspiration that day.  While looking over her wonderful fabric selection I found this.  Not what I would normally gravitate towards, but it would work with a the solids I had stashed away at home.

The design came to me while standing in the store.  Add gray with my solids and this may work for the back.  I rushed off to the house to get to work.  I had plenty of projects already started, but one more wouldn’t hurt.

I finished this week after a fight with myself about the binding.  I REALLY wanted to do brown originally.  Had it cut and ready to add and paniced.  It did not look right.  Back to my stash of solids and I found a wonderful green.  Much better.

The record breaking crowd at the Indianapolis Modern Quilt Guild meeting got to see a sneak peek off the design wall with the quilting.

Here is the completed quilt, ready for a new home.
Love the way it turned out what can be created when you just play.

Ski-vaca

I mentioned last week that my parents demanded our dogs for the weekend. So off we went to the Paoli/French Lick, Indiana area. There is skiing, lodges and just an enormous lake. While we didn’t play on the lake, we did stay on it. The view from the cabin was really nice.

View from our cabin

We left the ski lodge and were off to Paoli Peaks to ski on Saturday. Let’s be honest, I DO NOT ski. The sewing machine made the trip with us. Yes, I was planning to sew at the ski lodge. I had packed a number of projects to just play and create. I have lots of customs due soon, but I needed to just play.

Here is the hubby and friends ready to hit the slopes.

I sat myself in front of a window to monitor the action. Here is what I worked on…lots of 2″ squares I had cut the week before.

sorted and ready to be paired again.
Yes I ironed while in the lodge as well.
I had to make 2 stacks.

The fabric is Floragraphix from a couple of years ago. I had determined to get through my stash this year.

It was a great weekend complete with my first time ever doing karaoke. I was told it wasn’t bad. Good thing most people in the bar were intoxicated, singing is not a specialty of mine.

A Win Can Be So Bittersweet

Sunday’s Super Bowl was quite memorable.  It was hosted by my town…Indianapolis.  So far, everyone has raved about how great of an event Indy put on.  My husband spent the week working his full time job and then his part time job at a brewery downtown.  He met lots of people and had the opportunity to meet some of his idols.  My neighbor witnessed it and said it was quite stalkerish.  My husband has a passion for the New York Giants and all things football.

Well, I can thank his father for his slight obsession.  Okay slight obsession is an understatement, he was called Rainman of football last week by a Giant’s family member.  He knew the player, his school, where his father played in played in college and professionally.  They were impressed.  I guess I’m used to it.

However, my husband will not have the opportunity to speak to his dad about the Giants.  We are minus one in our cheering section.  Steve passed on New Year’s Eve very unexpectedly.  Over the last month, we have been grieving, dealing, and trying to move forward.  Then the Giants just had to keep winning.  It honestly has been the worst roller coaster ever.

Any other time I would be so happy for my husband and his love of the Giants.  It’s not the same this year, without his dad to say how he doesn’t think the Giants will play well.

Thank goodness for sewing, being creative, and having an outlet.  I’ve gotten back into running and on the bike.  Hubby and I have some weekend plans thanks to my parents that demanded our dogs for the weekend.

Off to do something normal.  Sewing, that’s my Friday thing.

PS…my favorite story from the week we spent in Albany with my wonderful MIL and BIL’s is:

Steve could not eat wheat.  Since I have known him, I have not seen the man eat bread.  However, in going through stuff at the house we found a giant collection of wheat pennies.  They were his thing to collect.  So a man that could not eat wheat, collected jars of wheat pennies.  Still makes my chuckle.

27 Dresses or something like that

Last summer I was approached by a friend to do something with bridesmaid’s dresses that were taking up lots of room in her closet.  Okay great, let’s make a memory quilt using the dresses.  There are a variety of fabrics, colors, etc to work with.  The finished product will have lots of embellishments from different aspects of the dresses.  The stack of dresses was quite large, this is a smaller version with the under dresses and most of the non-useable fabric discarded.

My original idea was a quilt as you go but that didn’t go so well.  So I scrapped it.  Back to the design board.  The light purple dress would be a great feature.  Here is a snippet of the blocks.

Hoping to have the quilt completed this week and ready for delivery.
