Scrappy Charm Boy’s Quilt

Making a quilt can be simple and still create a lovely end product, it doesn’t always have to be complicated.  As a seasoned quilter, sometimes I just want something that I can create over a weekend.  Mostly it’s to get the creative juices flowing for big projects that I may have on the horizon.

Not all quilts have to be difficult folks.  There, I said it.

One of my friends is expecting a boy this August and I wanted to make something cheery for her new bundle.  She was sticking to roughly the same color scheme from her daughter’s nursery:  brown and green.  If you remember I cut most my scraps into sizes I know I can quickly use.  I raided my 5″ charm sizes and started pulling.  Most of the blues were from the Mosaic Tile Quilt for awhile back.

Digging deeper I started pulling oranges, mossy green, and yellow to coordinate with the blues, grays and browns already pulled.  The colors came together nicely and she is thrilled with the quilt.

Baby quilts are meant to be used, at least the ones I make.  If it’s too intricate the family may thing they shouldn’t ever use it.  Isn’t part of the purpose of modern quilting to be more useful?  Could I have done more on this quilt, sure.  That’s not what I envisioned.  I wanted something that allowed the colors to blend, be simple, and practical.  Success.  Plus I wanted to finish it in a couple of days.  It felt good to finish a project that I like so quickly.

The entire quilt is scraps and stash.  Feels great to use what I had and make a gift for a friend.  Hope she enjoys some snuggles under the quilt with her new baby boy.

Hello Luscious Quilt Finished

I’m not sure if I’m more excited to show off my new fence or this quilt.  Seriously, the fence color is spectacular and I hope to keep it that way.  Hello Luscious baby quilt is stunning in itself and looks lovely against the fence.

The quilting was done with my walking foot.  I didn’t venture or brave using my darning foot.  Maybe I should have, but the results are still wonderful.

To get rid of the blue chalk I had to wash the quilt 3 times.  So much crinkly goodness once it came out of the dryer.  I’m adoring this quilt.  Backing fabric is also from my stash and coordinates really well.

Hello Luscious was way more girly than I remembered, but this quilt really balances it out.  Now it’s time to send it to it’s new home.

This may be a fun pattern to try in more neutral or boy’s colors too.  Hmmm…

Boy’s Outdoor Adventure Quilt

It’s Friday, Earth Day, and the weekend is about to begin.  Do you have any big plans?  None really here except some yard work.  Our gorgeous new fence needs some flower boxes to adorn it.  Bust out the power tools and let’s get creative.

Another finish to share as part of the April Showers series for a little boy who’s nursery has an outdoors theme.  Even better that I’m sharing this quilt on Earth day.  Luckily for me I had enough blocks left over from P’s new quilt to make a smaller baby version.  Toddler Bedroom Makeover reveal coming soon.  Seriously need to clean up that disaster of a room.

Notice the Sugar Pop backing again?  I still have enough in my stash for another backing.  That may be the most of one print I have bought in a while.

Do you have a go to backing for quilts?

Of course I bound in a solid color.  Over the years that has become my signature binding?  Signature may not be the correct word there, but MOST of my quilts have a solid binding.  Maybe trend is better?  I would love your input in the comments.

For now this quilt lives in Denver and is currently being snuggled by a new baby.

Hello Luscious Quilt

Welcome back.  Did you spend anytime outside this weekend?  My family did, it was gorgeous.  While my plan was to have this quilt finished today, mother nature’s beauty provided a much needed distraction.  My husband had been traveling over the week last pretty heavily.  It was just me and the toddler most of the week, leaving me little time or energy to actually sew and quilt after bed time.  Toddlers are exhausting!

For this quilt I found the remaining Hello Luscious jelly roll buried in my stash for a subway tile quilt that never happened.  In an effort to use stash fabrics and highlight the bolder colors of this line, I chose a gray to coordinate.  This gray was all stash and scraps I found in that giant black bag of scraps that I still haven’t tackled.

From the remaining strips, I cut 5″ rectangles.  Then subcut to 2.5″ squares.  After cutting the squares were sorted into their colors:  green, blue, red, pink and white.

Design for this quilt was kept easy.  I have great plans for the quilting.

Are you ready?  I’m not doing straight lines.  This took a while to mark and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Instagram got a sneak peek of my quilting this morning.  Wordpress and I were not getting along for the last couple of days.

Time for me to head back to the machine and finish my quilting.  It’s been quite the arm workout moving it around.

Hullabaloo Simple Charm Baby Quilt

hullabaloo baby quilt

Sometimes you want to create a quilt that is simple and uses your stash.  A while back I was “bored” and started going through my collection of charm packs.  I say “bored”, but I was probably avoiding doing something else like laundry.  In my charm pack stash were two Hullabaloo packs sitting there waiting for their opportunity to become a quilt.  I sorted out the fabrics for a girl and more gender neutral option.

Then they sat back in that box for a few months.  I had even pulled out the coordinating yardage that I had in my stash to back and bind a quilt.

An opportunity arose to make a quilt for someone just because.  They needed something cheery in their lives at that moment.  Not sure what I wanted to do, I went to my charm pack box and then found the Hullabaloo fabrics sitting there.  Oh course!

The hardwood floors look great in this picture!

I grabbed a gray solid in my stash and bordered the charms.  Like I said, simple quilt.  This whole quilt probably took my two nights after P went to bed.

EEK! This is blurry.

I found a big piece of scrap batting and wasted no time getting this quilted.  Again the quilting was pretty simple too.  X’s across the squares.

The binding was a Kona red sitting in my stash that matched the more crimson red in the Hullabaloo line.

There was just enough yardage in my stash for a backing as well.  A completely stash quilt, it was easy to whip up, and someone is enjoying some snuggles under it.  Sounds like a win to me.  Since there is red on the binding, I sent along a Shout Color Catcher for the next wash.  I did wash the quilt with one and it came out PINK.

Scrappy Irish Chain Baby Quilt Finished

Scrappy Irish Chain Baby Quilt

Updated as of March 2024.  Lots of traffic from this post still on the blog.  I love a scrappy Irish chain quilt for a baby shower.

Scrappy Irish Chain may be a new favorite for me.  Maybe it is the simplicity of the blocks or the overall scrappy look.  The baby has arrived.  It’s a BOY!

In the card to the parents I included this story about the quilt.

After I finished quilting we went to a wings and pizza place nearby.  I bound the quilt while at dinner.  I tried my best not to get wing sauce on the quilt.  While the quilt survived our dinner, my hope is that it’s used and gets lots of stains in it’s life.

For the backing, I dug deep into my stash.  The print is from the Taxi line from 2009?

Hubby helped me pick out the binding.  Red or blue were the top choices.  Red won and looks great on the quilt.

Instead of just straight lines I tried a more of the square and rectangle free motion quilting.

Look for another scrappy Irish chain in the future.
