Madrona Road Challenge – inspiration

Indy Modern quilt guild is participating in the Madrona Road Challenge by Violet Craft.  Over the next month I need to create something using these gorgeous prints but lacking inspiration right now.

First stop…over to Violet Craft’s blog to find out how she created these fabrics.  They are a balance of both floral and strong line prints.   If the gypsy daughter she speaks of has these, “rooted father and a gypsy mother,” that could explain the contrasting prints.  Our guild has the blue color way.

I can only add in one more print from the line and solids to make my creation.  I’m pondering just playing with the strong line prints and the florals separately.  Not sure how that will play out.

What have I pinned on my boards recently that could work as inspiration?

I’m leaning towards lots of white space to really showcase the prints but have some structure in my piecing.  For solids I’m going to throw in dark gray, black and light blue to coordinate.

Orange you glad to see me.

New projects outside of a quilt are always fun and exciting.  With this project the hardest part was finding the project.  My friend wanted the Robert Kaufman Orange Metro Tiles, almost impossible to find.  Finally found almost 2 yards to go with the project.

Since I don’t normally make pillows I needed a tutorial to get me going.  I found this tutorial online and pinned to my DIY board.  I finally checked something off my Pinterest list.  I will be making these again especially to coordinate with the new upstairs furniture.

The backing I made too large, but it was easy to trim down and still looked great in the end.

Thanks to my neighbor who has these great chairs outside, they made a good prop to showcase the color.

On the back above the envelope I added a faux button.

The tutorial is well-written and very easy to follow.  Give it a try if you need something quickly.

Triangle, triangle, why can’t you be square?

Right now many of quilts are custom orders for people with personalized ideas for their friend’s new arrivals.  The Dark Side of the Moon quilt and the Red Scrappy Circles quilt were a big hit.

One request was for a quilt that was a Czech Flag.

Do you see what I see?  Y-seams.  EEEK!!!  I went off to Pinterest to get some ideas on how to take the triangle feel and make it work.

Based on this quilt I had the idea of using blue, red and white fabrics that didn’t scream American flag to get started.  I thought gray would be good complimenting color.  Off to the store I went and found all of the fabrics.  There are a variety of Moda fabrics and a few others mixed in.  I used the Tri-Rex tool to help me cut out many 5 1/2″ inch triangles.

The piecing went well but I did lose some of the points when sewing the rows together.  Good quilting can trick the eye into seeing that perfect triangle.

Heard this weekend this quilt was a hit too.  I have a few triangles left over and I’m energized to give them another go.
