Scrappy Boys Quilt 2

This is quilt number two from the same batch of scraps.  After going through all of my scraps I did find a few more to add into the collection.  Can you believe I have enough to make one more?

For quilt number two I was going with the same modern mosaic layout.  The real challenge for this quilt was to minimize the repeating fabrics and organize the layout.  While I have enough to do one more quilt, the stash is getting LOW.

Things I have learned from making three of modern mosaic quilt…pressing is key.  You have to press regularly to keep the bulk down.

Quilt one and two do look really similar but I love the results.

The back uses the same orange back like quilt one.

Do you have a pattern that you enjoy making?  This may be my new favorite layout.  It’s a great way to use scraps and requires you to get creative with your layout.

More Orange

Seems like everyone is having boys or at least that’s what my sewing trend has been.  Lots of blue, so how do you take blue and make it more fun.  Orange.  I tend to stick with gray as an accent but I wanted a modern nautical theme for this quilt.

Originally the quilt was going to be in the pattern like the citrus quilt.  Instead I went for an all over pattern.

I wanted to keep it simple and I think I succeed.

The back was just pieced was some leftover fabrics.  Wonky much?

I swear it was straight when I sandwiched it.  Oh well, gives it character right?

Citrus Explosion

Using scraps has been a priority over the last couple of months.  I realized my scraps were exploding out of their storage and something and to be done.

This fabric was the back and quilt was to be in greens, oranges, and yellows.

I used a custom pattern of 1.5″ and 3.5″ rectangles in order to create the layout.

I added 8-10″ of white on the side to help accentuate the colors.  The thread used for quilting was a variegated green, orange and yellow.

Binding is a solid orange fabric.

Great way to use up scraps and create a cute baby quilt.

Lovebirds Quilt 2

Using the left over prints from the Spoonflower fabric from the first Lovebirds quilt, I wanted to make a second.  With this print, I have created two quilts if not maybe a third with the tree prints I have left.  This quilt started out as gender neutral.  The baby was born and turns out it was a girl.  Back to the design wall I go.

color ideas

Knowing the quilt was going to a girl, I added in the yellow and white retro floral print from my stash.  I think it really tied it together and made it more girlish.  Keeping the blues and greens make the yellow stand out more.

Lovebirds version 2

The quilting is done in yellow to really pop against the white. For the backing I pieced together some larger pieces I had in the stash.  A vintage sheet in yellow and white stripes, gray floral print and just a solid coordinate with all the colors on the front.  I knew for the binding I wanted to use an orange color.

My measly attempt at making a bird that looks similar to the front birds. Trust me it looks better from back here.  Poor things beak was messed up in sewing.  Too late to do birdie surgery.

Hope the new baby girl enjoys lots of snuggles in her new quilt.

Another busy week in the sewing room

Busy as usual in the sewing room this week.  I was asked to make a donation quilt for the Indiana Diabetes Association’s Gala.  The color to support diabetes is red.  Went through my stash and found all the black, red, and white fabrics.  Last Sunday during football the fabric was cut and ready to be sewn.  Here is the design wall sneak peek.

The quilt was finished at 2am and photographed at 7am.  Not the best pictures but at least I remembered.  I have been known to forget when I’m on deadline.

Off it went with the hubby to work on Friday to be auctioned off on Saturday.  Friday’s project was finishing a gender neutral quilt for some ladies I met while doing a show.  They wanted something modern and selected some of the vintage fabrics I had in my stash.

Here’s the back.  It’s a vintage sheet and I LOVE it.

Adding the tight quilting lines I think really helped.  I tried to keep it as neutral as possible.  Hard to not go girly or boyish.  The quilt was picked up on Saturday and they LOVED it too.

Busy week but always worth it to see people very happy and thinking of a happy baby that will get to snuggle on the quilt.
