Upcycle a vintage pillowcase into a quilted potholder. Also good for sweatshirts or t-shirts to repurpose. Join the #craftyfootball blog hop.

Fall is my favorite season.  Football is in full swing.  When I say football, I mean lots of football.  Were you aware between college and NFL games, you can watch a game almost any night of the week?  Obviously Sundays are the biggest day for the NFL and The Nagels go all out.

For the last seven years we have hosted Sunday Football.  We set up four televisions each with a different game in our basement.  May be have renovated the basement to work for Sunday Football.  From previous years you may remember we are a house divided.  I cheer for the Indianapolis Colts and hubby has been a NY Giants fan since he was a baby.

Over the summer we came across this great pillowcase at my mother in laws house and I knew I wanted to use for this blog hop.  Grab your crafty items and get ready to whip up a big hotpad/potholder for your events.

Supplies needed:

  • fat quarters of blue and light gray (coordinating with NY Giants colors or your preferred team)
  • 1/4 yard of secondary team color for binding
  • Old pillowcase, t-shirt or sweatshirt for the helmet option
  • fat quarter or scrap of cotton batting to absorb moisture
  • fat quarter or scrap of insul bright to resist heat
  • coordinating thread colors

Necessary tools:

  • sewing machine
  • needle
  • thread
  • scissors
  • pins
  • safety pins

Optional:  cold beer and a football game on in the background.

Take the pillowcase/sweatshirt/t-shirt and carefully cut out the logo you want to use.  The true gem with this pillowcase was on the back side.  I trimmed carefully around the cage of the helmet.  That is a light gray background but wants to photograph white.  Center your design and pin in place.

With a black thread, zig zag stitch around the outside of the helmet.  I chose black since the helmet has a black outline.

Zig zag stitch around any detail work as well.  Prevents tearing and helps keep the design in place.

You can stop here or add some detail into the helmet as I did.  Those black lines were calling for some quilting, plus it adds some dimension to the helmet.

Once the helmet or design is secure you will need to create a quilt sandwich.  I use this order.

  • top
  • cotton batting
  • insul bright
  • backing

Use safety pins to keep your sandwich together.  I pin aggressively since I tend to quilt straight lines.  The pulling can really move everything.

After quilting, trim the potholder to 17″ x 17″.

Bind the potholder in your favorite method.  This tutorial is my favorite.  I opted for red for contrast.  Your potholder is now ready for use.  We plan to use this to help protect the bar from hot services during Sundays.  You could take out the insul bright and opt for a mini quilt as well.  Hubby approves of this project and can’t wait to use it.
