Blogger Panel at AAFCS – Giveaway

A couple of weeks ago the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences held their annual conference in Indianapolis.  Coats & Clark was having an outbreak session on The Resurgence of Sewing and the Role of Bloggers.  One of our Indy Modern girls, Lindsay (read her write up here), has worked with Coats & Clark in the past for a tutorial and the connection was born.

Lynn Browne & I at the booth.

Did you know this is the 200 year of Coats & Clark?  Visit, www.coatsandclark200years.com for more information on their history.

An interesting read.

As part of the blogger panel we discussed how blogging and social media has had an influence on what we do and getting information out to new sewists, etc.  Many of the people in attendance were home economics teachers and 4-H leaders.  I think it was great for them to see younger women to involved in sewing and see our passion.

Five members of the Indianapolis Modern Quilt Guild spoke and answered questions.  All of us have different styles for using social media.  Some blog more, some tweet, and some just use the web for inspiration.  I was so happy to be apart of the program and convince my boss to let me have some time off work that night.

These were a gift for being apart of the panel.  So I thought I would share and offer a giveaway for the thread sampler below.  One of the questions we got was who got you started in sewing.  So I will pass that question along to you, who taught you to sew?

So many colors.

Use the Rafflecopter giveaway entry form below.  You can leave comments but the answer for the giveaway needs to go in the Rafflecopter entry.  Giveaway runs 7/9-7/15.  A winner will be announced on 7/16.

Not sure how to get my answer “in the Rafflecopter entry” – there’s no box or line to type it on. So I’ll put it here – I taught myself to sew following instructions in my Reader’s Digest Guide to Sewing (or whatever it’s called – a big thick book! Great reference!!).

  9. Jeanne Gwin says:

My mother tried and tried but Eleanor Burns is really responsible for my love of sewing, she always made it look so fun I just had to try it. Yes, I throw my pieces over my shoulder like she does. LOL Thanks

    I’m self-taught mostly, with a brief Joann’s “how-to” class getting me started.

I started out learning some basics in Jr. High Home Ec (Thank you Mrs. Bork!) and then taught myself from there.

I accidently hit enter before I put in who taught me to sew. It was a combo of my middle school class, my mom, and my aunt.

  13. Kim says:

I learned to sew from the gentleman who sold me my machine, from a class on how to make placemats and a class on quilting at a local community college. I’ve also done a lot of manual reading over the years!

    • Tisha says:

Imagine if more community colleges offered quilting or even sewing? So many people would benefit. I admire you, manuals can be too dry for me.

  14. Donna F says:

My mother taught me the basics of sewing but I taught myself to sew on a machine and to quilt.

Are you having fun with quilting? Besides your friend, are you using any books, blogs or trial & error to get you started?

  18. Gill says:

I was taught by Mrs Ellis at school when I was about 8!

  19. MarciaW says:

My mother started me off then the 4-H extension agent. But, both grandmothers, aunts, and great aunts all sewed too. Three were professional seamstresses. My mother is also my quilting teacher/mentor and has a great eye for color and design.
